DVK-300HD HD/SD Virtual Image Background Removal Machine - Operation Guide

Jan 23 2014

The biggest challenge in operating a virtual studio lies in achieving the best background removal effect. If the virtual studio, lighting, and camera are fixed, there is no issue – you can start working immediately after confirming the settings within the predefined parameters. However, if different individuals enter the virtual studio and modify the lighting or change the camera, you may need to reoperate the background removal machine and reset the parameters to complete a virtual studio task.

The core equipment of a virtual studio is, of course, the image background removal machine. Therefore, the quality of the output video from the virtual studio is directly affected by the performance of the background removal machine. Choosing a "good" background removal machine is a decisive factor in determining the quality of the video produced by the virtual studio.

What factors should a "good" and "suitable" background removal machine include? They can generally be divided into three categories, and you can choose the background removal machine you need based on your requirements:

  1. During the processing, it should have delicate editing functions such as Shrink, eliminating residual reflections, and adjusting transparency and solidity.
  2. Compatible with SDI and HDMI image input and output.
  3. User-friendly operation and settings.

A background removal machine that meets the above criteria is believed to be the best assistant in a virtual studio.

In the previous product information session, we learned that the DVK-300HD HD/SD Virtual Image Background Removal Machine meets the second criterion of signal compatibility. In this session, we will introduce its user-friendly operation design and how even a "beginner" can set up a background removal effect comparable to that of an experienced "professional."

The settings of the DVK-300HD are changed through a computer interface operation (as shown in Figure 1). By simply dragging with the mouse, you can quickly change the parameter values of the DVK-300HD. This not only shortens the time spent on adjustments but also takes advantage of the computer interface's operation benefits. It allows the initial values to quickly become the final effect settings. This is the most user-friendly design of the DVK-300HD – the "Setting Wizard."

(Figure 1) The DVK-300HD Setting Wizard operation is similar to the process of installing software on a computer. Following one step after another, you can quickly and easily complete the background removal settings for the DVK-300HD.

The following provides an introduction to the DVK-300HD Setting Wizard:

  1. In the DVK-300HD operating interface, select "NEW SETUP WIZARD" to enter the Setting Wizard (as shown in Figure 2).

(Figure 2)

  1. Another window will appear on the computer interface, providing adjustments for the MATTE parameters, and the SDI output image from the DVK-300HD will appear as a grayscale image.
  2. Use the mouse to adjust the parameter values for "BLACK LEVEL," "WHITE LEVEL," and "TOLERANCE" (as shown in Figure 3), allowing the SDI output image to exhibit the most distinct "black and white" contrast effect (as shown in Figure 4).

(Figure 3)

(Figure 4)

  1. After pressing "NEXT," enter the next window for "SPILL" parameter settings (as shown in Figure 5). This can eliminate the green (or blue) reflections generated by cold lights on virtual studio objects.

(Figure 5)

  1. After pressing "NEXT," enter the next window for additional "SPILL" parameter settings (as shown in Figure 6). This function helps eliminate black/white borders around the edges of objects caused by green or blue reflections.

(Figure 6)

  1. After pressing "NEXT," enter the next window for "POST CORRECTION" parameter settings (as shown in Figure 7). The primary adjustments here involve setting the "BRIGHTNESS" brightness, "CONTRAST" contrast, and "SATURATION" color saturation of the final output image. By making these adjustments, we can quickly achieve an excellent background removal result (as shown in Figure 8).

From initial to final settings, the DVK-300HD HD/SD Virtual Image Background Removal Machine operates like installing software. It guides through each step, allowing for the easy configuration of numerical parameters by following the four steps in the "NEW SETUP WIZARD." This is the most user-friendly and straightforward way to achieve background removal effects in a virtual studio among similar devices.
